Species diversity and abundance of snakes in Narmada Nagar town, Khandwa District, East Nimar, (MP) India

Vikas Upadhyay and Vivek Keshre

Snakes are highly adaptable and diverse animals. They are second top predator in a food chain and are very important for any kind of ecosystem. The variety and abundance of snakes in an ecosystem show a vital and healthy biodiversity. Snakes are sensitive and their population/ species are severely affected by anthropogenic activities and other environmental factors. Due to diverse climatic conditions India harbours about 340 species of snakes. In our country systematic studies on snakes have been made since 18th century. According to different studies the population of snakes is declining day by day therefore it is recommended to monitor the status of various snake species of a region continuously to protect its biodiversity. We present the first hand data of snake diversity of Narmada Nagar, east Nimar area. We have listed 19 genera of snakes.
