Silkworm rearing i.e., sericulture is the process of rearing silkworm to produce raw silk. It holds great importance in socio-economic landscape of Northeast India especially in states like Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. This practice provides livelihoods to people in rural regions and also conserves the rich indigenous knowledge system and traditional methods. This paper gives a brief overview about the traditional techniques used in cultivation of Eri, Muga, and Mulberry silkworms. It also explores some of the scientific advancements that have followed in recent years that have boosted the yield of silk production. An integrated system, where traditional and modern technologies blend to provide better yields while adhering to sustainability is proposed.
